Introduced in the late 1990s, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5066 expanded the young Aquanaut collection by offering a slightly larger 36 mm case while retaining the sporty elegance that had made the model an instant success following its debut the previous year. Available at first in stainless steel and yellow gold, the reference combined the collection’s distinctive rounded octagonal bezel with Patek Philippe’s innovative “Tropical” composite strap, creating a luxurious yet versatile sports watch unlike anything else in the manufacture’s collection. As one of the earliest generations of the Aquanaut, the ref. 5066 represents the foundation upon which one of today’s most sought-after luxury sports watch collections was built.
This elegant yellow gold example was manufactured and sold in 2004, near the end of the reference’s production. Its embossed black Tropical dial, applied gold numerals with Superluminova, and composite strap perfectly capture the understated character that has defined the Aquanaut for nearly three decades. Powered by the self-winding caliber 330 SC and housed in a warm 18K yellow gold case, the ref. 5066J offers a more discreet interpretation of the luxury sports watch than its larger modern successors. Accompanied by its Extract from the Archives, it presents an excellent opportunity to acquire an increasingly elusive early Aquanaut in gold.
