A miniature enamel masterpiece by Carlo Poluzzi

Key Takeaways

In this video, John Reardon introduces one of the most exceptional miniature enamels by the legendary Carlo Poluzzi. For the first time, Collectability presents a Vacheron & Constantin so rare and so important that it helps rewrite scholarship and reveal the life and times of one of the most important masters of miniature enameling from the 20th century: Carlo Poluzzi. The finely chased, gold powder compact, signed Vacheron & Constantin is decorated with a hand-painted miniature enamel of The Lacemaker by Vermeer. This unique piece was formally the property of the original owner and has not been seen in public for over 60 years when it was part of a special exhibition in Geneva in 1963.

Interestingly, there is an almost identical powder compact in the Patek Philippe Museum which is also decorated with an extraordinary miniature enamel of a landscape by Poluzzi. It was made around 1955 and was acquired by Henri Stern, later to become one of the first 100 miniature enamels on display in the Patek Philippe Museum.
John describes the fascinating life of Carlo Poluzzi who was truly a renaissance man. We learn that Poluzzi was not only a genius artist, but also an accomplished entomologist and a pioneer in mycology for whom the art of seeing became the art of making.
