Patek Philippe 18K white gold ref. 5270G with silvered dial, made and sold in 2011
Watches and AccessoriesLast time we offered a ref. 5270G, it was gone within minutes and we are pleased to offer another example of this modern classic still sealed in its original plastic bag. The ref. 5270 is appreciated as the well-deserved heir to the throne of Patek Philippe perpetual chronographs. With design elements and nods from the references 1518, 2499, 3970, as well as the 5970, the ref. 5270 is a watch that demands respect and research into its nuances and traditional design motifs that meld with the CAD based realities of today’s design. We all love debating ‘chin’ or ‘no-chin’ with our ref. 5270s but there is no doubt this watch looks great on the wrist in any flavor. Forgive the pun but the earliest examples of the reference, such as this presently offered watch, are notably less ‘tachy’ given the lack of a chin and no tachometer. History will treat this watch well. The March 2011 Patek Philippe Baselworld press release for the ref. 5270G-001 might say it best:
“The steel wheels and pinions are also meticulously finished: all teeth and leaves are individually polished by hand using a rotating hardwood disk. This work is done not just for the sake of beauty. Smoothly polished surfaces generate less friction, reduce wear, and transmit kinetic energy more efficiently. The owner of a Ref. 5270 cannot admire the craftsmanship invested in the interest of reliability because it is concealed beneath the dial. But it manifests itself over the years and decades when the buyer of the watch and the generations to which it is handed down have the privilege of experiencing how the value of their timepiece is preserved if not substantially increased.”
