PATEK PHILIPPE YELLOW GOLD BRACELET WATCH REF. 2551J
The ref. 2551 represented the next step in the evolution of Patek Philippe’s first automatic watches, following the release of the ref. 2526 in the 1950s. In response to growing demand for thinner watches, the ref. 2551 offered a more streamlined design. The thick enamel dial of the ref. 2526, which was prone to cracking, was replaced with a thinner, silvered metal dial, and housed in a case with a more refined, screw-back profile. The beloved automatic caliber 12-600 remained. Produced from 1954 to 1960, the ref. 2551 came in yellow, rose, and white gold, as well as platinum. The cases were crafted by Wenger, and their distinctive ridged lugs share similarities with those made for the ref. 2499 during the same period—a fun detail, considering both were produced by the same manufacturer. Additionally, the ref. 2551 featured the signature Patek Philippe crown, a nod to its predecessor, the ref. 2526. The dial was made by Stern Frères and features an engraved-enameled signature that has aged exquisitely. The icing on the horological cake is that the detachable bracelet is double signed Patek Philippe and Gay Frères.
