PATEK PHILIPPE AQUANAUT REF. 5060A
The launch of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut in 1998 marked a bold step into the future for the brand, as it sought to attract a younger clientele at the threshold of the 21st century. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Nautilus design, the Aquanaut was intended to serve as a more modern, entry-level offering for new collectors. However, the experiment did not achieve the anticipated results, as established, older Patek Philippe clientele quickly purchased the limited-run models, leaving the intended younger audience with few opportunities to acquire one. Despite this initial setback, the Aquanaut has since become one of the most sought-after timepieces in the world.
The model’s journey began with the ref. 5060A, officially launched as the “Nautilus-Aquanaut.” An interesting historical detail is that the clasp on the ref. 5060A is inscribed with “Nautilus” rather than “Aquanaut,” a reflection of the model’s early connection to the Nautilus family. It wasn’t until the launch of the ref. 5066A later in 1998 that the “Aquanaut” branding was incorporated onto the clasp.
This particular example, which is priced reasonably, boasts its original dial with intact original lume as well as the original strap—an impressive feature for collectors who value price, originality and condition.
