PATEK PHILIPPE GILDED BRONZE AND MARBLE CLOCK, REF. 1310
This rare and unusual clock is part of a small series of quartz clocks made in the late 1970s to showcase the ‘state of the art’ Naviquartz 3 movement. The irony is that this cutting-edge, quartz technology was used to power a clock with an 18th century design and aesthetic. Patek Philippe did this very much on purpose and made a horological statement heard around the world – that tradition and advanced research can go hand in hand. This particular example of the ref. 1310 is one of only two examples known to exist and the only one to have its original box, papers, Certificate of Origin, and an Extract from the Archives. The lavish presentation of this clock cannot be overstated from the Patek Philippe logo emblazoned discreetly on silk within the leather box, to the hand-engraved, gilt bronze decoration. The massively heavy, marble case encloses the Naviquartz Caliber 33 movement discreetly hidden behind a green velvet lined brass door, seemingly designed to act as an echo chamber to project the beautiful sound of the ticking quartz movement.
