PATEK PHILIPPE FULL SET FIRST SERIES SNAP-BACK REF. 3970
The ref. 3970 was released in 1986 and replaced the ref. 2499 as the flagship perpetual calendar chronograph of the brand. Utilizing a Patek Philippe finished Lemania caliber, rather than the Valjoux caliber of its predecessor, the ref. 3970 remained in production for almost 20 years. This example is one of less than 100 examples made of the first series in 1986-1987 before being replaced by the second series. It is easily distinguished by its snap-back rather than the screw back we see on the second series. Collectors seek fine examples of the first series for its vintage aesthetic. This 35 year old example is the 66th ref. 3970 ever made and fully complete with its original Certificate of Origin from Somazzi in Lugano. The case retains two hallmarks on the back of the lugs as well as two crisp hallmarks on its outer case back. For the collector seeking the rarest and most complete of ref. 3970s, look no further than this first series ref. 3970.
Much has been written on the reference but it is highly recommended you read Cara Barrett’s ‘In-Depth’ article on Hodinkee to get a detailed overview of the ref. 3970 as well as Collectability’s Guide to ref. 3970.
