PATEK PHILIPPE FOR CARTIER YELLOW GOLD POCKET WATCH REF. 770
When a collector encounters an unpolished specimen of a fresh to market watch, their horological heart begins to beat uncontrollably. Such is the case with this truly exceptional ref. 770 originally sold by Cartier in 1956. This example features an impressive dial featuring the signature of both Patek Philippe and Cartier. Cartier NY was a retailer of Patek Philippe watches from the late 1940s until the 1970s. During this time many of the most important references were offered through Cartier and almost all were signed Cartier. Speaking to individuals who worked at Patek USA at the time, it is clear that the relationship between the two behemoth brands was tenuous at best, especially towards the end. Patek Philippe wanted to feature their name on the dial and Cartier felt that their name should take the prime position on the dial. Some cases were made with Patek Philippe on top and others with Cartier on top such as the present example. Others feature only the Cartier signature.
The Geneva Seal stamped movement is also stamped HOX proving the watch was imported into the USA. Furthermore, the hand-stamped Cartier reference numbers can be found on the pendant. This watch is for the most discerning collector who appreciates the unusual history between Patek Philippe and Cartier.
