FULL SET SECOND SERIES PATEK PHILIPPE YELLOW GOLD REF. 3970EJ
Introduced in 1986 as the successor to the legendary ref. 2499, the Patek Philippe ref. 3970 is one of the most important perpetual calendar chronographs of the late 20th century. Powered by the caliber 27-70 Q, a Patek Philippe–finished Lemania ébauche, the ref. 3970 set new standards of precision and reliability while preserving the maison’s tradition of perpetual calendar chronographs dating back to the 1950s.
The second series, produced in the late 1980s through to 1990, holds a distinctive place in the reference’s evolution. Its signature feuille (leaf) hands and applied rectangular baton hour markers are design refinements that distinguish it from later series. Collectors prize the second series for its rarity, transitional design, and timeless proportions. The design is celebrated for its elegance, offering a link to vintage design codes while foreshadowing the modern era of Patek Philippe.
This exceptionally preserved full set watch was made and first sold in 1990. It was originally retailed by the Patek Philippe salon in Geneva and first sold October 18, 1990, almost 35 years ago to the day.
Collectability Says
“The second series 3970 strikes an ideal balance between rarity and wearability. For the astute collector, this example offers not only historical importance but also an incredible value – we know what these were bringing on the market today but what’s your guess on where specimen pieces such as this will be selling in 5 years? With increasing demand and shrinking availability, these early ref. 3970s are poised to claim their rightful place among the most desirable Patek Philippe complications of the modern era.”
