PATEK PHILIPPE YELLOW GOLD AND MINIATURE ENAMEL PENDANT WATCH
Patek Philippe commemorative watch celebrating The ascension of Geneva to the Swiss Federation, made in 1913 and sold in 1914
Watches and Accessories
Ladies’ pendant watches by Patek Philippe are still incredible value, especially those featuring rare handcrafts from the manufacture’s early years. Made with traditional techniques, the crafts of miniature enameling, jewel setting and engraving are exhibited at the highest levels. This is a historically important example that showcases the art of miniaturizing enameling. The watch was made as part of a limited series to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Canton of Geneva joining the Swiss Federation. At this time, it was quite popular to have recreational shooting events and Patek Philippe timepieces were the ultimate prize. This exquisite miniature enamel was made for such an event and the winner of the shooting contest brought home this treasure in 1914. To properly appreciate this work of art, special attention should be paid to the dial and hand engraved gold hands in the Louis XV style as well as the mastery of the the miniature enamel painting depicting a view of Geneva with the lake in the foreground and Mount Salève in the background as well as the cathedral.
Similar pieces can be seen at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva as well as illustrated in Patek Philippe Museum Book – Patek Philippe Watches – Volume II, pp. 93-94. Another example from the same series is illustrated in Patek Philippe Pocket Watches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, 1982 edition, page 151.
