This is a Collectability first. For the very first time we are offering a non-Patek Philippe timepiece on this platform. But for good reason… this hunting case watch is exceptional in every way and would make a Patek Philippe watchmaker, past and present, blush with envy. As documented in John Reardon’s book, Patek Philippe in America, there was (and is) a long and complex relationship between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. During the 19th century, the alpha in the relationship was clearly Tiffany & Co. Patek Philippe was considered a humble supplier in their opinion. During the late 1870s, Tiffany & Co. decided to bring production increasingly in house and utilize many of the same sub-suppliers that Patek Philippe used. The result was a wide variety of watches that closely resemble the signed work by Patek Philippe and for good reason – they were made by the same people using the same materials.
Here we have a massive 54 mm specimen of a watch in an extremely heavy 18k case that weighs in at 100 grams. The dial features three oversized subsidiary dials indicating month, date, and moon phase. The icing on the cake is the aperture with the day of the week. The dial, case, and movement is signed “Tiffany & Co, Geneva“. It is very important to note that it is not signed “New York“. Literally, a Tiffany Geneva watch of this quality was a not so subtle attack on traditional Swiss watchmaking suppliers that Tiffany hoped they would no longer need. History has showed us that Tiffany & Co. was wrong, they needed their friends at Patek Philippe and the relationship still exists today. This fresh-to-market hunting case perpetual offers the collector an opportunity to own a superlative example of Swiss horology, with an American twist.
