Occasionally, the most seemingly simple pocket watches hold a secret within.  Once the case and dust cover are hinged open, it is always a pleasure to see the words EXTRA hand engraved on a bridge indicating that a watch is from Patek Philippe’s highest standard of finish. This method was used during the late 19th and early 20th century and only the top quality pieces made of the era (think watches made for Henry Graves, Jr or James Ward Packard) were typically marked EXTRA on the movements. Most often seen with pocket watches, the degree of finish of these watches is remarkable. The Geneva stripes, 18 jewels or more, adjusted to 8 positions, the jeweling, the chamfered edges, the list goes on.
