PATEK PHILIPPE SECOND SERIES REF. 3940J
Launched in 1985, the Patek Philippe ref. 3940 revolutionized the world of fine watchmaking with its innovative design, setting it apart from the competition. A bold step for Patek Philippe, the ref. 3940 replaced the ref. 3450, boasting a completely new mechanical and aesthetic approach. Featuring the advanced Caliber 240 Q, this movement was not only thinner and more modern but also captured the refined spirit of Patek Philippe in the 1980s.
The ref. 3940’s DNA embodies the perfect balance between tradition and innovation — a hallmark of the Stern family’s vision for Patek Philippe during this period. With an estimated production of only 7,000–8,000 pieces from 1985 to 2007, this timepiece is a rare treasure for discerning collectors.
This particular example, dating from 1988, represents the early years of the second series. The second series movement block starts with movement number 771,000 and this rare example is movement 771,099 indicating it is one of the earliest examples of the second series from the first year of series production in early 1988. Note the opaline silvered dial with sunken subsidiary dials and attractive leap year cross divider. Beautifully preserved, this example is accompanied by its Extract from the Archives.
Don’t miss the chance to own this important piece of Patek Philippe history — a watch that embodies both timeless tradition and cutting-edge innovation.
