A Collectability first: a collaboration with Dennison Watches

Collectability is excited to launch its first ever collaboration watch: a limited edition Dennison watch. For Collectability to put its name to a modern watch, it must be something special — and this watch is. It combines an unusual shape with quality production at an attractive price. We are so happy to put our name to a watch that is both immediately accessible and a fun design.

The collaboration started with a chance meeting between Collectability founder, John Reardon and Dennison director, Stephane Cheikh. Both were attending an auction in Geneva when John spotted what he thought was a Patek Philippe Golden Circle on the wrist of Stephane. On closer inspection it was a Dennison ALD watch and John was immediately impressed with the quality of design and production. After trying on the watch – and learning the attractive price point — John knew this was a watch he wanted to own and that an exciting project was in the future. Now that project has become reality.

Founded in 1874, Dennison has a rich history as one of the historic names in Anglo-American watchmaking. It is rooted in the fascinating trade (and rivalry) between Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. For nearly a century, the company produced cases for some of the most prestigious Swiss brands — including Rolex, Omega, and Jaeger-LeCoultre — before stepping out of the spotlight in 1967. The question is, what kind of cases would Dennison have designed if it survived the quartz revolution ? The answer lies in the brand’s recent resurrection and its brilliant association with celebrated Swiss designer Emmanuel Gueit, the creative force behind the Royal Oak Offshore and the Rolex 1908.

Guiet grew up in the world of watch design — his father was the famed Jean-Claude Guiet, creator of the Piaget Polo. He was also influenced by two other great watch designers Gerald Genta and Gilbert Albert and their love of shape can be seen in his ALD design for Dennison. Yet the ALD is a very modern design with a case construction that combines a slim 6 mm profile with a unique, cushion shape. Look closely and you see that the sides of the bezel are slimmer than the top and bottom giving depth to the design. This coupled with the lack of lugs results in a stunning shape that is easy to wear for all people. When asked what differentiates his design for Dennison, Emmanuel Gueit notes, “The shape. The difference between Dennison and the other brands is the shape. It is bringing the old shape back alive, back upfront again. Something different.”

Dennison generously gave Collectability free reign with the design of the limited edition series. The genius ALD case design by Gueit was already a winner, so Collectability focused on the dial. Inspired by the two-tone, Sunray dial of its favorite Patek Philippe Golden Circle watch ref. 3862 from the 1970s, Collectability wanted a dial with no logos so that the beauty of the design could shine, uninterrupted.

“The Patek Philippe ref. 3862 has always been a personal favorite, but finding an example in acceptable condition for my collection, or indeed for the many requests from collectors, was always a challenge.” said John Reardon. “Furthermore, the dials often don’t age well and have imperfections. However, with this collaboration design, I can immediately wear the aesthetic I love.” The final Collectability design nod was to add the Brevete symbol of a cross to link the Dennison + Collectability logos engraved on the back of the case. The Brevete symbol usually identifies a patented invention, but it is also reminiscent of the symbol for Switzerland — a white cross on a red background. A perfect mark to unite Collectability and Dennison.

The Collectability + Dennison watch is not a direct homage to Patek Philippe, but there are design elements such as the dial that are reminiscent. However, the distinctive Dennison ALD case design embraces the DNA and spirit of 1960s and 1970s form watch design in a way that few other watch companies have explored. The Dennison watch not only captures the look and spirit of a bygone era, but it also reinvents it – which will speak to Patek Philippe collectors and all watch enthusiasts. In addition, its price point under 700 USD opens this watch to a broad spectrum of watch collectors.

This new watch is the first collaboration for Dennison and Collectability is very proud to launch what will no doubt be the first of many exciting collaborations for the brand.

Stephane Cheikh adds : “We were thrilled that Dennison’s first collaboration was with Collectability — true experts in the watch world who not only understood our rich heritage but also embraced the renewed spirit of our brand.”

The watch will be available in both stainless steel and gold PVD finishes. The distinctive case is made of stainless steel and measures 37 mm x 33.65 mm. Its 6.05 mm ultra-thin case profile can be comfortably worn by both men and women.  The two-tone Sunray dial finish complements either a stainless steel or yellow gold finish. The Swiss Ronda Quartz 1062 movement is water resistant to 30 meters. Each watch is presented on a 20 mm bespoke leather strap with a 16 mm pin buckle matching the curvature and finish of the case. Delivered in a striking presentation box designed specifically for this limited edition, each watch is something to be worn now and be enjoyed.

Even the packaging is bespoke: the elegant packaging was inspired by Collectability’s own packaging but is uniquely designed to complement the Sunray two-tone dial. Image credit: Collectability
