PATEK PHILIPPE YELLOW GOLD TRAVEL TIME REF. 2597J
Here we have a ref. 2597 HS, where “HS” stands for “Heures Sautantes” meaning Jumping Hours. This reference, marketed as the “Cross Country” in the USA, was initially priced at $1,000—quite a premium considering that, in 1958, the iconic ref. 1518 retailed for just $1,500. The ref. 2597HS features a classic 35.5mm Calatrava case crafted in 18K yellow or rose gold, produced by Antoine Gerlach—one of Patek Philippe’s favored case makers, known for his work on models like the ref. 96, 570, and 3448.
Between 1958 and 1962, Louis Cottier is believed to have received around 75 movements of calibers 12 400 or 27 AM 400, modifying them with his “travel time” setting function. The first series of the Ref. 2597 was produced from 1958 to 1961, while the second series ran from 1962 to 1977. To date, only 48 yellow gold pieces and six pink gold pieces have been identified.
This specific example is a first-series Travel Time ref. 2597 from 1960. The dial features applied gold batons, each exhibiting a stunningly unique patina. It retains its original pearling and the beloved raised enamel signature, which are highly sought after by collectors. A distinctive touch on this particular watch is the engraving on the caseback: it bears the social security number of a Mr. MacLeod from Rhode Island, adding a personal and rare detail to this exceptional timepiece.
